The island of Milos is an active mining site since the Antiquity. Exploitation began with extraction obsidian lumps and volcanic lavas tuffs specific type, that were used as millstones, sulphur alum (alunite). Currently, activity focused on perlite bentonite, even though some years ago, kaolin, silica, pozzolans barite also exploited. bentonite rather a specialty not commodity, it has multifunctional properties, therefore in wide range industrial applications, such foundry sand, drilling muds, lubricant oil, civil engineering structures (waterproofing sealing, diaphragm wall construction, grouting, concrete workability additive, etc.), cat litter, iron ore pelletizing - Fe metallurgy blast furnaces “improver” for poor quality bentonites. peculiar behaviour bentonites can be attributed to combination various geological hydrogeological factors occurred at time its formation from glassy tuff precursor. Despite continuous flourishing tourism island, does face any threats existence, both parties follow specified regulations environmental restrictions necessary allow dual economic growth.
